Cramerton Police were called to the scene of a two-car crash at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. A vehicle driven by Kimberly Monique Smith, 31, of Gastonia, failed to stop at a red light and struck a vehicle driven by Michael Glen Johnson, 23, of Belmont. Johnson was transported to Gaston Memorial Hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition. Johnson’s passenger, Daniel Dustin Fite, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Smith and her passenger, Lachaka Shonte Hemphill, 26, of Gastonia, were both treated at and released from Gaston Memorial Hospital. Smith was charged with Driving While Impaired. Cramerton Police are continuing to investigate the crash and additional charges on Smith are pending.
