Explorer Post 588

 Purpose:

The Cramerton Police Department's Explorer program is designed to:

  • Familiarize youth with various aspects of the field of law enforcement.  Special emphasis is placed on educational programs directed toward law enforcement careers.
  • Improve relations between police officers and the young people of the Cramerton area through a close working relationship. 
  • Allow Explorers an opportunity to become closely involved with police work through specialized training, work-along duty assignments, and community-based programs. 
 

Eligibility and Membership:

Any young man or woman between the ages of 14 and 20 who is interested in the career of law enforcement may apply for membership.  All applicants are checked through their schools, local police departments, and the juvenile court system.  Upon completion of a thorough background check, applicants, along with their parent(s), are interviewed by a department Explorer Review Board.  Successful applicants are granted probationary membership status for a period of six (6) months.  Upon successful completion of the probationary period applicants become full members of the post. Meetings and Training:

  • Monthly post meetings are conducted on the 1st Thursday of each month from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM.  Most meetings are held at the Cramerton Police Department.
  • Monthly training meetings are conducted on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM.  Most meetings are held at the Cramerton Police Department.
  • Additional meetings, events, work-along assignments and trips are scheduled throughout the Exploring year.

 


Uniforms:

The Explorer uniform is a standard police type uniform and is worn to all post functions and meetings or as directed by the Explorer Manual and the Explorer Advisor.  Explorers are required to provide approved shoes for their uniforms.  Cramerton Police Explorers wear light blue uniform shirts and navy blue pants with light blue stripes.


Advisors:

The post is supervised by police officers serving as advisors and associate advisors.  The advisors are the key adults in the post and ensure that the post functions properly and offers the necessary programs within outlined purposes.  The associate advisors assist with post functions, meetings, training programs and community projects.  Officers receive detailed training in their role as Explorer Advisors.


Programs: 

  • Work-Along Program – After initial training and successfully completing the probationary membership period Explorers may be assigned duties with uniform patrol and investigations.
  • Children’s Safety Programs Explorers are involved in fingerprinting programs, providing and distributing children’s safety literature and materials in public and private schools and daycares.
  • Christmas Needy Family/Senior Citizen Program – Explorers are involved in collecting and distributing gifts, flowers and food & fruit baskets to needy families, children and senior citizens.
  • Seminars and Conferences – Explorers attend national, state and local training seminars and conferences.  The seminars and conferences provide Explorers with leadership training, exposure to other Explorer programs.
