Cramerton Police K-9 Officer Patrick Mullinax and his partner Edge were presented an award during a regular meeting of Town Commissioners on January 3 at the G.M. Michael Council Chambers. Chief of Police Greg Ratchford presented the award to the team. Mullinax and Edge received the award for their participation in the United States Police Canine Association’s Region II trails which were held in Burlington, NC in November. The USPCA was formed in 1971 to promote the betterment and use of police K-9 teams. It is the oldest and the largest organization of its kind.
The award certified the team in the Police Dog I category through the USPCA. The PD-1 category scores the K-9 team on obedience, agility, search, criminal apprehension and K-9 recall. Cramerton’s K-9 team received 610 points out of a possible score of 700 putting the team in 2nd place in the association’s novice category and finishing 10th place in a field of 43 K-9 teams from the region.
“The department is very proud of Officer Mullinax and Edge for their hard-work and dedication to prepare for and participate in the USPCA trials. We are even more proud to have them patrolling the Cramerton community and protecting the citizens of the town.” Ratchford said during the presentation of the award. The K-9 team was placed on the road in March 2005 and is the first K-9 unit ever utilized by the Cramerton Department.
